Design of a Pitching and Surging Point Absorber

P.S. FROG is a bi-directional (dipole-like) point-absorber, consisting of a floating flap or paddle, facing the waves and reacting against them by means of a large interior moving mass housed in an enlar ed section at the bottom (Fig. l). The dynamics were reported in 1986(1) , but have since been simplified by formulating them in terms of the motion in surge of the centre of wave pressure. It is this motion alone which dictates the capture efficiency: when optimised its velocity should have amplitude X/2B and be in phase with the wave force f where X is the amplitude of f and B the radiation coefficient. The capture will then be equal to the theoretical maximum for a single rigid absorber(2) of X2/8B.
